Moersleutel Ancient Engineering Flint Sickle – Quadruple Mash Barley Wine 11%
Forged the Old Way. Engineered the Hard Way.
Flint Sickle is a powerhouse 11% Barley Wine, brewed using techniques that push both history and process to their limits. This beer is quadruple mashed — yes, four mashes — to extract maximum richness, density, and depth from an extraordinary grain bill.
With rye malt and Chevallier heritage malt making up 65% of the grist, Flint Sickle delivers a thick, almost jelly-like body and a distinctive marmalade-driven finish. This is Ancient Engineering in liquid form: raw, deliberate, and unapologetically intense.
The Craft Behind Flint Sickle
Quadruple Mash, Heritage Malt & Controlled Fermentation
Flint Sickle was designed to explore how far traditional raw materials and extreme mashing techniques can be pushed.
Chevallier & Rye: The Structural Core
-
Chevallier malt — a historic English barley variety — brings deep malt richness and classic marmalade character
-
Rye malt adds weight, viscosity, and subtle spice
Together, they create a dense, powerful backbone that defines the beer’s texture and flavor.
Layered Specialty Malts
To add complexity without distracting from the core, we introduced:
-
Chocolate rye – subtle cocoa depth and roasted nuance
-
Amber malt – toasted warmth and dryness
-
A touch of caramel malt – rounding sweetness and balance
Cold-Fermented English IPA Yeast
Instead of a traditional barley wine yeast, we used our go-to English IPA yeast, fermented cold to control esters while still encouraging:
-
Soft apricot esters
-
Gentle fruity lift
-
A cleaner, more defined finish
This fermentation choice adds intrigue and elegance to an otherwise massive beer.
Hop Selection: Classic English Character
-
Bramling Cross – red fruit, blackcurrant, subtle spice
-
Tango – floral tea notes and refined bitterness
These hops support the malt richness rather than compete with it, adding balance and depth.
