It’s large enough to keep you dry during heavy rain, but small enough for easy storage in a bag or coat pocket when you don’t need it. Additional benefit of always carying an umbrella: if you’re drinking a nice IPA or stout beer, the rain won’t dilute it when you hold an umbrella over it! Talk about multifunctional.
